Imaging services

Imaging exams allow radiologists (imaging specialists) and physicians to view structures and activity within the body. This is vital for diagnosis but also for treatment, to ensure your care plan is working as it should.

If you need a routine mammogram or a more complex radiology procedure, we work to meet your needs.

At Alaska Regional Hospital, we offer advanced equipment and a variety of imaging options and exams. This helps your care team understand the larger story of your health and help you decide any next steps for treatment.

Our imaging services

Our imaging procedures are supervised and interpreted by fellowship-trained, board-certified radiologists. Your care team can use the results to diagnose and evaluate your symptoms, monitoring your treatment progress and prepare for surgical procedures, if necessary.

Computerized tomography CT scan

A computerized tomography scan combines thin cross-sections of digital images to provide a detailed diagnostic image. It is a useful tool for identifying injuries or diseases where an early diagnosis can be helpful and potentially lifesaving. Biopsies and other treatments can be performed using CT scans.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a type of X-ray that creates real-time “moving” images of internal organs and structures. It also helps doctors get a clearer view of internal functions, such as swallowing, pumping blood and gastrointestinal movement.

Image-guided procedures

We also provide several image-guided lab procedures including:

  • Injection therapy for pain management
  • Placement of catheters to draw blood, give intravenous (IV) therapy and allow dialysis
  • Placement of port-a-caths and peripherally inserted central venous catheters for oncology care or medication infusions

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

MRIs acquire images of the body using powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves. They are able to show extensive details of soft tissue anatomy that are not easily diagnosed through X-ray, ultrasound or CT scans.

Nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses radioactive materials to diagnose and treat medical disorders. It is an invaluable tool in providing results that can help diagnose symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be planned.

Radiologists usually use an injection or inhalant, such as gas, to introduce a radioactive substance, known as a radiopharmaceutical or tracer, into your body. Next, the tracer attaches to a targeted area for study.

A specialized video camera picks up radiation from the tracer, and the results allow for crystal-clear images of organs, blood vessels or other soft tissues. From there, a treatment plan is created.

Breast health imaging

Our leading-edge imaging facility provides a soothing, spa-like environment with the latest technology. Your doctor will receive results usually within hours of your procedure. We specialize in breast health screening and interventional radiology procedures.

Some of our procedures include:

  • 3D and traditional mammograms
  • Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, or bone density scan
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy
  • Ultrasound-guided biopsy

Digital or 3D mammography

Mammography uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine the breasts. During a digital mammogram, pictures are taken to form a 3D picture of the breast. The procedure offers high-definition images with more details than a traditional mammography.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound utilizes high-frequency sound waves to display moving, 3D images of the inside of the body on a monitor. No radiation is involved with ultrasound imaging procedures. It is most commonly used to see a baby in the womb.

X-ray

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, just like visible light. Individual particles called photons pass through the body and are detected by a highly sensitive imaging plate that is transmitted into a sharp digital image.

About our imaging center

We are accredited by The Joint Commission. Achieving The Joint Commission's Gold Seal means we are committed to delivering positive outcomes in safe surroundings. We have also achieved accreditation by the American College of Radiology in mammography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and CT scanning.

All results are collected and managed by a fully digital environment, the Picture Archive and Communications System (PACS). This fully digital environment allows your physician to access digital images and view your test results from anywhere with internet access, enabling us to get information about your health faster.
